Great trip, lots of elephants!
Hans_S, Jan 2025
Our guide and driver, Samuel was super knowledgeable about all birds and animals in the park. He was happy to answer all our questions and making sure we were enjoying ourselves. This tour takes a full day (for us it was 5AM - 8PM) in which you cover a lot of the Amboseli grounds. As this is an open national park (no fence) there is no guarantee that animals will be there. It seemed like there were more zebras outside of the park on the roadside than inside the park. Nevertheless we saw most of the big animals including several herds of elephants, a hyena, Maasai giraffe and hippos. Although it wasn’t a problem for us, I want to point out that the van that’s used is very spacious but not great for shock absorption. People with back problems will do better booking a tour with one of the big jeeps.

WORST SAFARI EVER: unsafe vehicles; don’t book!
Philippe_R, Nov 2024
From start to finish this was a terrible trip. After many years of using visitor tours and being satisfied, I can tell you that this was the absolute worst Viator-related experience I’ve ever had. We booked a day tour to Amboseli Park for a Safari with Akoth Safari. The vehicle we were in broke down only four hours into the tour and we had not reached the park yet. The vehicle was old, had no seatbelts, was dirty, and it was no surprise to me that it broke down on the side of the road. It’s not the one advertised that I have added to pictures. After waiting for 45 to 60 minutes , another vehicle from another company came to pick us up, but only after prodding and pushing from my angle. The new driver from a company I still don’t know whom he belonged to, did not establish a rapport with us, and I don’t blame him because he appeared to be just as bewildered as we were as to what was supposed to happen and how we were supposed to get back. We saw very few animals and the driver, although nice enough, was on his phone the whole time I believe trying to figure out what the plan was to get us back. At the end of the Safari tour, we were brought back to a small village (see picture) where we reunited with our original driver and then we again waited for 35 to 45 minutes for another vehicle to pick us up. We were left alone - my wife and I - unattended in a small village. The driver disappeared, but I’m sure he was within a short distance. We were finally summoned to Board a Taxi for the (see colorful vehicle in picture) which was super dirty and unacceptable (as far as the original contract vehicle that we were supposed to have). Note; these vehicles are not recommended for tourists by the US Embassy, although the vehicle appeared to be only for our use. We were dropped off two hours late so our plans for Friday night were tanked. What was very frustrating was that besides the taxi driver going at an insane speed and being unsafe weaving in and out of traffic, the original Tour Guide and driver kept laughing and saying “This is Africa.” This was also $600 plus. Needless to say we were not pleased. It would’ve been one thing if the owner of the company or the manager had called us that day or the day after even to express his apologies. However, it took much prompting from me to get his email from the company to explain to him that we were not satisfied. That we wished to reach a settlement or at least some kind of reimbursement. Eventually he came up on the net and weakly apologized, which I accepted, and offered a free ride to the airport or a lunch ($50). However, we had already left Kenya am- after much back-and-forth. I finally told him that if he was not willing to reach settlement of any means, then I would just have to pursue reimbursement by some other means with my credit card company. This was absolutely the worst experience I’ve ever had through a Viator tour. I do not recommend this company whatsoever. I find that their communications throughout the whole ordeal was unacceptable and almost nonexistent. If it had been for Susan, the contact person who I was dealing with throughout, we would’ve not had any idea what was happening along the way, so kudos to her. But for Mr. Mumba, the director or manager or owner of the company (he was pleasant enough) he only came up on correspondence after four days and would not talk on phone even though I asked if we could talk by phone. He refused to offer any reimbursement, and anything else except for an apology. The world moves on…however, I would recommend if you were doing a Safari in Africa and Kenya specifically do not use this company because you will not move anywhere. Akoth Safari it is called.

Halo Thank you for your review to us, as the company we have a saying that the customer is always right. The fact that you felt unsatisfied by our service is our responsibility and we are sorry for that. I still owe other readers of this review an explanation. 1. The car you used had all the seatbelts and it’s a fairly new car and we have used it all the time. All day tours vehicles we assign are in good shape since it’s a drive fast quick tour. Breaking of the sump guard through hitting a bump is a pure accident and we could not avoid. 2. How did we react as a company; In 10 minutes time another we had sourced for another vehicle and it was on hand 25 minutes later to drive you to the park. It was in the middle on nowhere and it was amazing that we could find you a replacement vehicle in a very short notice. In normal circumstances it could have been the end of the tour. The tour went on and you were able to reach Amboseli- do the safari, have lunch at The Luxury oltukai lodge and be brought back to the gate/ highway. We were again able to find you a private shuttle do drive you all the way back to Nairobi to your Hotel sankara. We reacted fast and saved the tour. CONCLUSION We did our best to remedy the situation and the tour went on. We spent extra to hire 2 more cars and we did not charge the client anything extra. The client asking for a refund of 300 USD from us was totally unfair. Apologies We did not know the client was a diplomat and was not supposed to go on shuttle, we apologise for that, Though it was just the 2 of them in a 10 seater van , it was not a taxi as its being called. As a company we humbly apologise
Best safari tour ever

Samuel was s fantastic guide. He made the entire day fun. Great driver who found lots of animals up close. He had a,wealth of knowledge about the park. He stopped outside the park so we could get great views of giraffe. Well planned bathroom and snack breaks. The buffet lunch was fantastic

Wonderful and unforgettable day and amazing your guide Kevin who was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable of all the numerous exotic animals we saw and of local culture. I strongly recommend this tour

Worth it
Joseph_C, Oct 2024
Kazungu was the perfect guide. He was very easy to be with, quite knowledgeable about the wildlife, and had a fun sense of humor. With traffic it is a very long day, and for the time we had available it made the most sense to schedule it this way. Amboseli is a special place.
Response from Host, Oct 2024
Hello Joseph Thank you for sharing your great review with us. We are delighted that you had a truly memorable day and hope to welcome you back for more unforgettable experiences in the future. Regards, Susan
Long day, but worth it!
Pete, Sep 2024
Vehicle arrived precisely at the time scheduled. Samuel was the guide. It's a long way to the park and back, but the time in the park Samuel maximised and was constantly working with us to get the vehicle in the best position for photos with Kilimanjaro as the backdrop (when the clouds moved). 15 hours door to door; but thoroughly worth it - we messed the cheetah, but got up close to a lioness and zebras, and very very close to a herd of elephants on several occasions. If you have a day and want to guarantee some game sightings, this tour is a safe bet.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Hello, Thank you for sharing your grate review with us. We are glad that you had an amazing time with Samuel by encountering plenty of animals and were also able to see the view of Mt Kilimanjaro which is the tallest mountain in Africa. We are very grateful for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back for another unforgettable trip. Regards, Susan
Unforgettable experience
JaeKwang_Y, Sep 2024
Much more than we expected. Although Amboseli is famous for the elephants, we were also able to see gazelles, warthogs, zebras, wildebeests and, thanks to our excellent guide, James, we even had the chance to see a group of lionesses trying to hunt., which was simply amazing!
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Hello, Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience. It sounds like you had an amazing time with James by encountering the elephants and other plain animals. We are very grateful for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back for another unforgettable adventure. Regards, Susan
Amboseli
Carol_M, Aug 2024
We were lucky enough to have James as our driver. He was professional, congenial, and went out of his way to give us an incredible view of the animals of Amboseli. Elephants, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest... the list goes on. The stop for lunch at the Oltukai Lodge was memorable what with the food and the elephants walking by in the distance. The fact that your pictures will have Mt Kilimanjaro in the distance certainly adds to the visit. A definite 10 rating!!
Response from Host, Aug 2024

We were traveling as a group of 12 ranging in age from 12 to 75. Our guides, Frederick and Samuel were amazing! They were both very knowledgeable and courteous. The lunch provided was excellent and the lodge restaurant was beautiful. We saw lots of animals and a herd of elephants crossed the road right in front of our vehicle. It was truly an experience we will never forget!
Response from Host, May 2024

Never again...
Camille_E, May 2024
This tour started off good but quickly deteriorated throughout the day. We got picked up promptly at 5 am and started our journey from Nairobi to Amboseli. Our guide, James/Jim, was very friendly and allowed us to enjoy the landscape as we drove in. We made a rest stop that we thought was specifically for the bathroom but we had to walk through a market place to get to the bathrooms. Of course, we were followed throughout the store and asked by several people to purchase souvenirs. It was unexpected and caused us to reach the park after 10 am when it already started to heat up. Then we literally drove around until 2 pm barely seeing any animals because of the heat. Our driver was on the phone the entire time he was driving us around in circles and my husband and I were left to our own to try and see if there were any animals to spot. Our driver was not really knowledgeable about where the best places were to look for animals so we spent the most part of 5 hours roasting inside the un air-conditioned car to see only a handful of animals. We finally had lunch at 2 pm after having no breakfast and were left on our own until 3:30 pm when we had to track down our driver because he did not let us know where he was going while we ate. Instead of calling it a day and starting to make the long trip back to Nairobi, he decided to keep us there until the park was about to close before we started to head back. Along the way, he stopped several times on the side of the road where local children were begging and we didn't have anything on hand to give them. I can't imagine why he would stop unexpectedly and we were not prepared for the amount of people who would solicit us to purchase their goods. Then he made his own personal stop because he said that his wife wanted onions and he wanted to buy them there because they were cheap. So, we sat in the car while he went to do his own shopping, and were just ready to get back already. Over the next four hours, we got caught in a torrential rain storm and our driver was driving very erratically throughout traffic. At times, he was driving off-road, with us tilted to the side and balancing on only the both left side tires, speeding down the highway. It was extremely scary with the rain and the roof of the vehicle started leaking so we literally had to sit in the middle of the van to avoid getting ourselves and our belongings wet even with all the windows closed. We did not get back to our hotel until 10 pm and we never stopped for a bathroom break or ate anything beyond lunch in a 17-hour day. This by far was the worst experience of our entire trip and I would not recommend it at all. I would advise just scheduling to stay a couple of days in Amboseli rather than do this day trip tour. Lesson learned.
Response from Host, Jun 2024
Hello Camille, Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We sincerely apologize for the challenges you encountered during your safari. The weather conditions and road conditions can indeed impact the overall experience. We regret any discomfort caused by the heat and humidity, as well as the unexpected stops and delays. But as you know no one can control the weather patterns. The animals couldn't come out when it's that hot. Additionally, the driver had to overlap in some instances so as to avoid the crazy traffic, otherwise you'd have arrived much more later than you did. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we will take measures to ensure that such issues are addressed and improved upon for future tours. Regards Sylvia

Best Daytrip Safari. Best driver guide!
Jeff_T, Apr 2024
What an epic and perfect day. Jerry was the best you could ask for. Part expert NASCAR driver. Part tour guide so knowledgeable about Amboseli and part comedian making the day fun. Dozens of elephants, hundreds of zebras, gazelles, beautiful birds and at the very end HIPPOS!!! Lunch at Ol Tukai lodge was the best we’ve had on our trip. I wish we’d thought about staying the night. Driving the road from Nairobi to Mombasa is not for the faint of heart so you better have an expert driver like Jerry. Bring some snacks, the best camera you can, and your energy. Fantastic day!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hello Jeff, We're delighted to hear that you had such an incredible day with Jerry. Thank you for sharing your experience, and we're thrilled that you enjoyed the sights and sounds of Amboseli. Amazing Amboseli tour!

We had amazing tour with our guide and driver James. It was a long day from Nairobi but completely worth it to see Mount Kilimanjaro and all the animals. James was excellent at spotting all the animals in the park and we had wild elephants cross the road right in front of our call! I would definitely suggest this trip for anyone who wants to do a day trip safari.

James was a great guide. He’s knowledgeable and he cared about my experience. Also, I was the only one in the tour so I was able to have a private experience. In the park I saw plenty of elephants , zebras, impala, and other animales. The Kilimanjaro was fully visible. It is a bit far from Nairobi but I would 100-% recommend this experience
